The Maldives Economic Review (MER) is published with the primary aim of fostering and encouraging informed discussion about Economic reality of the Maldives. In addition, the Review is also meant to be a reservoir of academic and professionally written articles and research findings on the Maldivian Economy.

We invite and encourage all interested parties to contribute articles, commentary pieces and opinions published in the Review. Such contributions shall conform to the published Editorial Policy of the Review published herein. Comments to published pieces can be sent at Comment, where they will be moderated only for language and relevance to the piece to which it is aimed at. MER is Published and Edited by Ibrahim Athif Shakoor and Fazeel Najeeb.

Ibrahim Athif Shakoor

​

Ibrahim Athif Shakoor, has a BA in Economics, and an MBA from Monash University, Australia. He has served at senior, CEO level and Board Positions of some of the biggest and most diversified corporate entities of the Maldives.

 

Since 2009 Athif continues to offer lectures on the business, commerce, and special presentations on the reality of the Maldivian Economy to the business faculty of Maldives University and at Villa College and Villa High School. He is in a modest measure, a writer and an essayist and his writings are being collected together at www.athifshakoor.com.

 

For more than a decade he has been partnering with like-minded individuals to heighten awareness of economic issues. Athif is also a consultant to some of the bigger corporate entities in the country and for a selected few also in Sri Lanka.

Fazeel Najeeb

​

Fazeel Najeeb (PhD, LLM, B.A. (Hons.))  was a chief trade negotiator for the government of Maldives from around the mid 1990s to early 2000s.

 

Fazeel served as the governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (central bank) and the chairman of its board of directors from October 2008 until the end of 2013. He also was an expert (advisor) at Qatar Central Bank from 2014-2017.

 

He is the chairman of Atoll Capital Finance, a private company providing finance brokerage services. Recently he took up the post of Assistance Professor at the Maldives National University.
